I know google won't kill it for a long time, but in most ways it is going away since no one is using it. Then hopefully one day they'll finally admit failure and it will go the way of google buzz.

What is stopping you from telling some Goolge form you are from USA? Many companies offer free US numbers over VOIP, that you can use during registration.
I'm also a college junior and have been looking to gain development experience. I recently just had success emailing a startup in my area using their jobs@startup.com address. I listed some of my skills, gave a link to a project that I did, and told them why I was passionate about what they were doing. The CEO ended up emailing me back the same day.
If anyone else is in this position I'd recommend trying this first since it's very good way to express interest in a possible job opportunity with a company.
Does anyone know if a hackathon has been held where there were active measures/rules/restrictions in place to ensure that all development was done within the period of the hackathon?
