Now I'm curious: Which hypervisor has that limitation?


It's more that any consumer grade processor seems to have this limitation.

I have an i7-6700HQ for example, and I can either have Hyper-V turned on (I'm on Windows) in which case I can only run 32-bit VM's with VirtualBox, or I can turn off Hyper-V in which case I can run one 64-bit VM on VirtualBox, and then only 32-bit VM's past that.

If I'm doing Android development, I can't run a 64-bit VM at the same time as the Android emulator is 64-bit.

Sometimes I want to run my web server, an Android VM, and maybe a Redis server on Ubuntu in a VM. I can't emulate Android and run a 64-bit VM, so the 32-bit Ubuntu distro is invaluable here.


All it takes is a couple opsec slip-ups to give a dedicated group of attackers the clue they need to link your identities together. Maybe you'll never make a mistake or say something that the wrong kind of person takes umbrage with, but is it really fair to put that task on every single Internet user?

Any cars that have "automatic lane holding" could definitely be told to swerve left. Granted, steer-by-wire systems like that aren't quite pervasive yet. I believe electronically controlled throttle or brakes are more common. Locking individual brakes especially could quickly lead to a very bad situation. Also, putting the car in neutral or removing the key is likely not something that is going to occur to most people in the 1st half second or so that all this is happening.


I think one of the key differences this time is the amount of retraining involved. Taking a farm worker and teaching them how to work on an assembly line involved orders of magnitude less retraining then training an assembly line worker to be a teacher, psychologist or nurse.


Also if you're into human biological differences and heretical things like IQ, the bell curve bar for "can farm instead of hunter gather" "can factory instead of farm labor" is very low, like IQ 70 or something. You don't need an IQ of 120 to put a nut on a bolt on an assembly line.

However, lets say all the jobs with IQ below 120 are replaced with an IQ 120 AI or similar automation via the efforts of over IQ 120 engineers...

Most of the population is physically unable, as best we understand, to ever obtain a MSEE or a PHD in computational fluid dynamics. It doesn't matter if we have 100M job openings for people with advanced CS degrees no matter how much we pay them, with only 300M people in the country the bell curve says we can't find the warm bodies to staff them.


Applying machine learning is not going to be requiring a PHD, especially when great libraries and model zoos are available off the shelf. I think it's going to turn into a "maker culture" like web design. People are going to enjoy a very low entry barrier to applying ML and automation. It's going to be mix and match, a bazaar of solutions. Most of ML will be assisted by meta-ML systems and thus almost automated.


The key part phrase there is "[c]ompared to the ThinkPad of the day". IMHO, MacBooks and ThinkPads were nowhere near comparable in build quality until the the MacBooks went to unibody aluminum construction.


and they were only comparable then because lenovo seems bent on cheapening the ThinkPad.


It still kills me to see everyone using 192.168.1.0/24. IMHO, there is only one reason not to use 10.0.0.0/8 and it's because that can sometimes conflict with the address space commonly used for work VPNs. If that's an issue, an arbitrary /16 from the 172.16 - 172.32 range would be a good bet. I haven't really been using cheap consumer routers with their stock OS in a while (maybe 10 years), but is it still common for them to be stuck on 192.168.x.0/24 for the LAN side? I kinda assumed this was more of a problem from like 10 years ago, but I could be wrong I guess.


In my very anecdotal experience, the block that most consumer routers ship with as a configured default is, by far, 192.168.1.0/24 or 192.168.0.0/24. I've run across a handful of 172.*, but they were so exceptional that they stood out.

I imagine that vendors (e.g Linksys) are not inclined to change them, perhaps because they simply work for most people, and changing the default would most likely invalidate the rather large number of tutorials, FAQs, guides, etc. that simply assume that IPs are assigned from the 192.168.0.1-254 range.


What is the reasoning for not using the 192.168.0.x address space? I'm a networking newbie who doesn't understand. I've actually changed a few routers to use the 192.168.0.x instead of the 10.x.x.x space that was the default. Why should I not have done that?

The only router I've had at home that used Class 10.0.0.0/8 by default was a AirPort Time Capsule. The other three or four I've had over the years were configured to Class 192.168.0.0/16 by default


Yep and the 10.0.0.0 on an Airport killed my wife's VPN as it couldn't route as expected and then I wasted half a day trying to figure out what might be wrong on a completely locked down desktop after 1st line support gave up and said it should work must be a problem with your wifi.


My $20 totally off-brand bluetooth headphones support multi-pairing. Does it always work 100%? No. Do I think cheap multi-pairing capable headphones will get a lot better as it becomes more important? Definitely.

What do you use? I also buy $20 totally off-brand Bluetooth headphones (I wear them while exercising, and sweat ruins them every few months), and mine don't have this feature, which I would love.


How often does it need to be recharged? Will it last a whole day at the beach?
