The lack of human connection has been a trend for many decades now, covid just accelerated it all at once. Not like there was much choice, lots of people died, we did what we had to.
The communities that did exist were always running on fumes, basically only existing due to inertia. When the inertia was cut, even if only for a couple weeks in some places, they were done. That’s it.
The social damage has been here, and we’ve been zombie-ing our way through it. Covid just let the undead stay dead, and turns out we can’t revive it.
And the massive damage this did to children's education. I think people who didn't have a child in the school system at the time might not understand how poorly the schools functioned during that time.
My child had two intelligent and supportive parents, including a stay-at-home mother, and it was still rough. Many of her classmates just flat-out lost a year of education. There's still obvious effects on her cohort years later.
Almost every single meetup group in Northern Virginia was completely destroyed and did not grow back. I watched as dozens of local meetups, several running for many years, disappeared over night. I managed one as well and my crew held on to ours for as long as we could. We managed to keep it running online for several more years. But the social damage was done. After running the thing for 12 years, not being able to find anywhere that was willing to host us in-person again, and all of us original organizers having moved to different cities, there was nobody willing to take over.

We had concerted anti-vaccine campaign. Literally trying to make you feel afraid of vaccines or feel sorry for kids that might get them. And yes, it was fear spread by men who fancy themselves manly men.

I am particularly salty about this one. Because the exact same ideological and political groups who are throwing complete temper tamptrum over lockdown are the ones who want women to be stay at home moms. I did not, lockdowns were easier, you had a lot more communication and everybody was in the same position so you could realate.

Yes, I dismissed the reactions as overreaction and the usual drama, until I read what DHH himself has written this summer. He would no longer fit the European far right comfortably to be honest, his current views align better with the 1930's. It's clear him and me won't agree on some things (I wouldn't go to Robinson's marches) just like I don't agree on things with some European friends who are too conservative or too leftist, but I'm really interested to hear his 1930s views... unless you want to trivialize what was happening back then?

Nothing extreme about this. I have British friends of Indian descent who have expressed similar sentiments to me.

The comment I responded to had an issue with him comparing Roma people to animals. I just said he compared local people to animals too. Now if you move goalposts and say comparing to wolves is worse than comparing to sheep, we can argue about that but it's a different argument.

They did both actually. Could call it broad spectrum rhetoric, as some rhetoric works on some people and not others, and people riled up on emotions don't stop and consider if they're being internally consistent in their rhetoric.

This is an actual researched phenomenon with evidence behind it, known as rapid-onset gender dysphoria (ROGD). It's controversial, though only because it's at odds with mainstream trans ideological beliefs. But it does explain why paediatric gender clinics have had such a huge influx of new patients in recent years and why they have significantly skewed female.
About the two links you originally posted: I read them just before commenting here. It's a common (especially recently) view about immigrants in many countries. In Europe and USA it's a common politically conservative view, in PRC, Korea, Japan, Russia it's more mainstream.
Not something I fully support. I disagree about disliking let alone deporting immigrants just because they're different or because of the skin color. However, I can see an issue when immigration significantly worsens tragedy of the commons. My view as I mentioned in some other thread before is that it's not unreasonable to expect an immigrant to culturally integrate (note that this doesn't mean abandoning religion or traditions) and speak local language. I guess DHH may be more conservative than me, but comparing it to German Nazi seems a stretch. Also, nearly half of Europeans I come across in my experience have similar views.
Based on your summaries, I stand by my opinion. The average conservative European is against trans weeks (no opinion), may agree that some cultures can never integrate (I disagree), may claim that some people are culturally incompatible because their parents are from some countries (this may be the worst, and I disagree), may claim that London is no longer full of Brits (contrary to your summary of it census puts a number on Brits of any skin color-59%-but I disagree that it is in itself an issue), would classify the grooming gang scandal as a Muslim-related issue (no opinion, as far as I recall Mohammed's recorded sayings discount harm to non-believers but no idea if that played any significant role), dislikes gypsies' effect on public places (I heard similar stuff from other Europeans, personally I don't have anything against gypsies and disagree with stressing ethnicity, but haven't lived where their presence is noticeable and IMO it's not unreasonable to expect integration from immigrants), etc. These don't seem like extreme views even if I don't support them.
It's clear I don't agree with him but if there was a smoking gun that made his opinions too extreme considering mainstream I'm sure they would surface in your summaries.
Not sure it's 1930 German Nazi level bad, though him being a bit famous makes it worse. I can see why some people may feel like they want to switch providers. luckily I don't use 1password.
So the agents started doing something useful after a period of filling mailing lists and bug bounties with slop. Sound good, but that's not entirely a good thing. The volume of good reports is a burden as well, and it's likely that long-lasting open source C/C++ projects have legitimate vulnerabilities unpatched. But we don't have any new maintainers, I think.
The real question is will [when will] these vulnerabilities get fixed faster than they can be found. LLMs are finding a lot of real bugs that have existed without being noticed for 20+ years. It is generally expected [hoped] that in a short time all those 20 year old bugs will be fixed and LLMs will settle down to just things introduced in the last month (or perhaps this pull request) and thus be manageable.
That's becoming less common. The issue is that, if training only contains examples of CVE reports, then asking for one will get you one, even if it's not grounded in reality. But if training consists of many negative cases with the response, "I can't find one," them that will become the default unless evidence pushes it towards a report. It's a classic class size problem. SOTA models seem to have this largely solved, though a determined person (just like a determined boss) can prompt one into giving a false answer just to satisfy the request.
First, is there any reason they have to? The LLM makers are aware of this problem and doing things to stop it. Maybe they will start saying "I can't find anything". Already they refuse to provide some exploits.
Second, most people are not prompting for a CVE, they are asking to review and find issues if any. Which sometimes finds a CVE, but in my experience it sometimes does say "looks good".
Hence future CVEs on a lot of projects will likely demand working exploit code for testing. This at least attempts to lock the issue down to something more tangible.
The problem isn’t the efficiency of car use, it’s car dependency. If retail is only available in the huge units it’s impossible to access those without a car. And if people end up owning cars, even against their will, they will end up using those daily.
