I've been on the beta of SB for a little while. Nice product and the guys have been pretty helpful with my questions so far.
I'd recommend grabbing a trial account if you have an app to build anytime soon.
Do you think that some form of dynamic time warping algorithm, performed on the data of each distinct group, could help give a better overall view of that group's behavior in a static heatmap image? Presuming participants share similar scanpaths within a group.
Just a thought, I understand the data may be too noisy / have too much variance for this to work in practice.
The problem with applying complicated algorithms to an infographic is that it makes it more difficult for the reader to know what exactly they are looking at. I think infographics should always have a "transparent" quality where a reasonably seasoned person could explain exactly what each individual point of data means. When you start applying sophisticated kernels to the data, this becomes hard to do.
Modern eyetracking solutions can be quite accurate. I've used SR Research's Eyelink II [1] and have seen results from Tobii [2] eye trackers that are impressive too, considering their passive nature.
The SR Research I can totally understand, since it's head-mounted, proprietary hardware. The Tobii is a bit more impressive, but I think it's using IR emitters to light up the pupil, and I assume it's using their own camera. Very impressive monitoring rates, though.
My doubt concerns claims to track eye movements reliably using a built-in webcam, and available light.
During my final year project for my BSc, I tried to address the problem of losing the temporal data from eye tracking in heatmaps with an accelerated replay, heatmap animation. Here's an example:
Definitely a step up from heatmaps, though I think there's a lot to be said for providing data as a static image rather than a heatmap, especially when they are being added to a powerpoint or PDF.

A very simple extension to alter the width of a web page's body dynamically with a slider.
I love reading articles on the web, but find it uncomfortable when then line lengths of the text are excessively long. This little extension aims to help with that.
My first venture into chrome extensions. Please feel free to offer constructive criticism for improvements etc.
