It is good to be skeptical of that "faster" and that 2% measurement, because there are lots of opportunities to make them ambiguous. But clock frequencies are hardly useful for comparisons between AMD and Intel. They'd be even more useless across architectures.
Benchmarks are as good as it gets. Aggregate benchmarks used for marketing slides are less than ideal, but the problem with marketing is that it has to apply to everyone. Better workload focused benchmarks might come out later... In their defense most people won't look at these, because most people don't really stress their CPUs anyway.
