I'm not a sound engineer or anything, but I've noticed that dedicated audio equipment is really fast - there's always zero perceptible latency, even in a complex system that uses a bunch of different boards connected together. It's hard to make very low-latency software because of all the layers of abstraction between applications and the OS and various hardware buffers.


And software buffers! Those are usually much worse than the hardware ones.
