I suspect that's because the AI was trained on the internet including all historical documents i.e. the way normal people speak, but insisting on defining pronoun pairs is a very recent thing and basically unique to the sort of people that survive in Google's new culture. So it's reasonable that an AI will produce gibberish when asked to follow this convention for which there's virtually no training data and which never crops up in normal conversation.
