I believe it has taken a turn for the worse, not just in the US. It's a sign of a deplorable development which needs to be documented which this article does a thorough job at I think.

I can't vouch for all of it (not an expert at this stuff), but taken as a whole it seems like a well researched article that paints a credible picture we need to take into account if we aspire to any sort of neutral point of view.

agree important it is exposed, though I don't share your optimism that much can be done about it. Govt(s) are always going to be able to send the goons round, so mass media must eventually comply. The only way to stay safe seems to be 'stay small', where the resources of the state won't be expended on stuff which is low impact.
