I disabled hangouts on a device I couldn't build from source, then got a constant alert it was trying to start again (Hangouts has unexpectedly stopped notice) so blacklisted it in startup scripts. Google gives you no option to remove it.

Could it still be selected as the default messaging app? I had no issue disabling Hangouts on my Android 4.4 device.

Reboot your phone, it will start again and try to make itself default messaging app unless you edit init .rc scripts, on 5.1.1 Android anyway.

I recommend not being on Android 5.x.
